Transplant Manitoba said more than 11,400 Manitobans registered their intent to be organ and tissue donors in 2018, the highest ever recorded in the province. By comparison, the second largest wave of registration was in 2012, the year the registry launched when 7,875 Manitobans signed online.
Reg Helwer, MLA for Brandon West and a parent of a daughter who received a kidney transplant, said much of the large spike in registered donators was born out of the Humboldt bus crash tragedy on April 6, 2018, when a semi-truck collided with the team bus, killing 16 players and staff of the Humboldt Broncos Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League team
