Doctors combine treatment with research to put Alberta at forefront of transplant technology
Between 2008 and 2017, the number of individual donors in Alberta increased by nearly 50 per cent from 104 to 155. In 2016, Alberta set a record for most deceased organ donors in one year at 70 — 16.1 per million people — but still lagged behind the national average of 20.9 donors per million. “Transplantation is an incredibly rewarding activity and every day we transform patients’ lives that were previously on death’s doorstep, and patients who receive these transplants are so incredibly grateful” said the U of A’s Dr. Shapiro
